The People’s Picture is proud to be part of a new public arts commission, working with partner Well North Enterprises, to engage with the communities of Harlow and Gilston Garden Town to help realise their vision for a healthy, sustainable, adaptable and innovative town.

The final photo mosaic will be made up of thousands of pictures, with up to 50 ‘local stories’ highlighted to reflect inter-generational communities, entrepreneurs, public health and education etc.

When Harlow was created as a New Town some 70 years ago, it grew from a vision shaped by Sir Frederick Gibberd, acknowledged as one of the leading architect planners of his time. Gibberd saw the town as a place to celebrate the arts, particularly sculpture, as well as being:

Since then, the strong communities of Harlow have grown and so have their ambitions and needs. Harlow and Gilston Garden Town is to be a joyful place to live. There will be major investment in infrastructure; the provision of quick and eco-friendly ways to travel; new sustainable homes and schools; new health facilities; new community facilities; and will see new areas of public green spaces becoming available for all to enjoy.
