The photograph was taken of my father and I at the Arboretum during the Polish Armed Forces Memorial Unveiling Ceremony on 19 September 2009. My father died of prostrate cancer only a few weeks later on 9 November 2009. He was deported to the former USSR in 1940 and was incarcerated in a labour camp in Siberia until he was released following the Sikorski-Maisky agreement of 30 July 1941. He served with the Polish Forces under British Command from 1 April 1942 to 23 October 1946. I volunteer at the Arboretum for the working weekends and it is a great comfort to me that we spent one of his last days there together.
