My son Captain Dan Read was KIA Afghanistan in 2010. In October 2009 he was injured & returned to England for hospital care. I was able to spend a whole week with him at his home with his lovely wife who he had married in 2008. I feel I got to know him & the man he had become, so much better in that short time.
Despite the horrors of his injury & losing two of his colleagues & friends while he recuperated & against the advice of his CO he returned to complete Herrick 11 in December.
His main focus was to support his team. He was the ATO for team Illume part of the CIED taskforce in Helmand province. He disabled over 30 IEDs but sadly fell victim to an undiscovered device on the morning of 11th January 2010. His men adored him as did his wife & all his family & friends. He will not be forgotten. I am a very proud but heartbroken mum & I miss him more than any words can say.
